I think I like drawing better than painting. You can get a result much faster.
After a big change in my life at the end of last century, I gave my life to the Lord. What does that mean? It means I knew I couldn’t do life on my own, and that I wanted to go to heaven when all of this living on earth was done. The more I read the bible, the more I wanted to draw what I thought Jesus was like. Not what he looked like. No one knows that, and there’s a reason God didn’t focus Isaiah 53 or other scripture on Jesus’ looks.
But I had thought he was mad at me. When I learned the truth, I drew this picture. From what I have heard, this is one of two ‘laughing Jesus’. He is the author of life, so while the bible describes him as ‘the man of sorrows’, he died ‘for the joy set before him’ (the promise of being with those of us who accept him, for all eternity).
Gene Simmons from KISS told a friend of mine, who was watching my table at Comicon when I’d stepped away, that ‘he (my Jesus picture) looks a little Anglo’. Gene was right, but when I made the drawing, I was doing it from what I felt at the time.
And looks don’t really matter when you’re talking about the One who loves you more than his own life.
This piece has sold thousands and thousands across the world, and I’ve given a lot of them away. I like reminding people that God loves them and has a plan for their lives…because He does!
